ABOUT ALTCOINS

6 min readNov 3, 2022

You should be familiar with altcoin if you are new to cryptocurrency. What then is an altcoin? What connection does it have to Bitcoin? Let’s go through it.

What is an Altcoin?

In general, every cryptocurrency besides Bitcoin is an altcoin. An altcoin is a cryptocurrency that is not Bitcoin, such as Cardano, Solana, Polkadot, or Uniswap. Since Bitcoin is the most well-known and well-established cryptocurrency worldwide, some people consider it the “primary” cryptocurrency. Comparatively speaking, Bitcoin has the highest market capitalization or the total value of all issued cryptocurrencies. The number of distinct cryptocurrencies, each with a different monetary value and set of applications, is in the thousands.

Just after the launch of Bitcoin, altcoins were created. So the very first cryptocurrency to emerge is called Bitcoin. Additionally, distributed ledger technology and the blockchain concept were first popularised by cryptocurrencies. A revolution was brought about by it. However, it had some significant limitations, just like any other first-generation technology.

Just like every first-generation, there would be second and thirds that usually work on the setback of the first. We had Ethereum come later on, and Dogecoin and the rest that still run today. For this reason, the definition of an “Altcoin” no longer includes a few coins that have made their name resound in the crypto world.

In addition to Bitcoin, other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, Litecoin, and Dogecoin are being left out of the altcoin definition. Thousands of cryptocurrencies are listed on the cryptocurrency tracking website CoinMarketCap, and all but a small fraction of them are classified as altcoins. Each alternative cryptocurrency has its history and culture. Some products might be useful and valuable, and their prices might rise significantly over time. Others may end up being ineffective or even scams.

You can combine the words “alt” and “coin” to form the phrase “altcoin.” The term “alt” stands for “alternative,” whereas “coin” refers to a cryptocurrency.

Types of Altcoins

Altcoins can be classed in different ways. The ever-evolving nature of the crypto world makes this sub-topic dynamic. We will talk about the major ones below.

1. Mining-based

With this kind of cryptocurrency, transactions are verified, and new coins are added to the supply through mining. Equations are solved by equipment for miners. The first miner to solve the equation typically gets to verify a block of transactions. Afterward, cryptocurrency payouts are given to miners who validate blocks in return. Mining was the first method used to process cryptocurrency transactions because Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency that depends on mining. However, mining has a few drawbacks, including a high energy requirement.

Based on mining, altcoins are classified into two categories:

- Proof-of-work altcoins

- Pre-mined altcoins

While Proof-of-work altcoins are those coins produced by resolving complex mathematical problems, Pre-mined altcoins cryptocurrency has had some of its coins mined (and distributed) before the coin’s scheduled launch date. For instance, Ripple (XRP) was developed as a cryptocurrency for a centralised payment system that offers a quick and affordable way to transmit money in partnership with banks.

2. Staking-based

In contrast to the Mining-based type, we have the Staking-based, which leans on staked coins and rewards stakers. Staking is a technique these cryptocurrencies use to confirm transactions and increase the number of coins. A staking-based cryptocurrency offers holders the option to stake their coins, which commits them to be utilised for transaction processing. A participant is selected by the cryptocurrency’s blockchain technology to validate a block of transactions. Participants earn cryptocurrency incentives in exchange. An example is Ethereum; a couple of months back, they switched from Proof-of-work to Proof-of-stake

3. Payment Cryptocurrencies

These types of cryptocurrencies are used to pay for goods and services. For example, if you own a payment token, you can store it as an investment or use it to make purchases. The goal of a digital payment cryptocurrency is to be used as peer-to-peer electronic cash to speed up transactions. Generally speaking, this type of cryptocurrency has a specialised blockchain that only supports its function as a means of exchange. As fast and inexpensive transactions would be preferred in this kind of digital asset, the blockchain that this type of cryptocurrency is constructed upon is typically not designed to handle smart contracts. Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, and Litecoin are examples of payment cryptocurrencies.

4. Stablecoins

As the name implies, stablecoins are static. However, that doesn’t imply they don’t follow the market’s upward and downward trends. Stablecoin, meanwhile, is designed to lessen price fluctuation. Therefore, although there are fluctuations, they never extend beyond a small area. Using the value of another asset as a benchmark, stablecoins track its price. Most of the largest stablecoins are tied to the US dollar and try to imitate its value.

The first stablecoin is referred to as Tether. Since it provides a means of reducing fees compared to exchanging U.S. dollars for each transaction, it is also a popular altcoin utilised by experienced crypto traders when trading crypto on an exchange. Stablecoins may be crucial in facilitating regular consumers’ use of cryptocurrency for everyday purchases. This is a possibility that officials in the government have taken note of, most recently with the Biden administration’s proposal to regulate stablecoins more strictly.

5. Governance Token

These are the tokens that cryptocurrency producers give to users. It provides them the authority to propose ideas or cast votes on resolutions that will have an impact on the future of that cryptocurrency. For example, most Decentralized Autonomous Organizations use governance tokens (DAO). Unfortunately, they are useless for transactions and have no intrinsic worth. This makes cryptocurrency more decentralised because decision-making is left to the cryptocurrency holders. DeFi’s intricacy, however, might be a barrier for most users and adds to the overall volatility of cryptocurrencies. Most people start using governance tokens after thoroughly experimenting with the more approachable parts of cryptocurrency.

6. Memecoins

Memecoins, a well-liked altcoin whose value mostly stems from community buy-in, is named after social media jokes and puns. Memecoins frequently enter the crypto ecosystem in large amounts. They are quickly snapped up by enthusiastic trend followers and influencers, unlike Bitcoin, whose value is more closely tied to fundamentals like scarcity and the total market cap. Meme coins are virtual currencies created as a joke. They are risky investments because they always lack real utility.

Even though meme coins are widely used, they are riskier investments than Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies because they are all about timing and getting your 15 minutes of fame. Some cryptocurrency investors try to predict which meme coins will endure the test of time by searching for elements other than popularity that might provide them long-term worth, but this is largely conjecture. This initial value is mostly short-lived, and the price will fall as soon as the trend dies. Dogecoin and Elongate are prime examples of this.

We would draw the curtain on the types of altcoins; however, there are more, and there will be more because of the dynamism of the crypto world.

Pros and Cons of Altcoins

Here are a few Pros and Cons of an altcoin

Pros

1. Altcoins have improved on the aspects of Bitcoin by being easier to decrypt and use, and just like every first-generation, the other generations tend to be better.

2. Stablecoins. There are alternative coins linked to the value of particular things. This keeps their value intact. And is a characteristic that bitcoin lacks.

3. They offer high-potential rewards

4. Variety. There are myriads of altcoins in the crypto market.

Cons

1. Risk. This is a major disadvantage of venturing into that part of the crypto world. There are lucrative returns; the same goes for losses.

2. Scam. Many altcoins end up not picking up pace and probably die off for one reason or another. Some are outright scams from the onset.

3. Volatility due to thin liquidity.

4. Skepticism. Investors only trust a few altcoins from the myriad of options. Many do not have utilities or roadmaps to add to their convincing power.
